I’ve been involved in Premier League Reading Stars for over ten years. It is the best sports-based literacy intervention package I have ever seen.
This is what it is all about:
Premier League Reading Stars (PLRS) is a reading intervention that uses children’s passion for football to motivate them to enjoy reading and to improve their reading levels.
The intervention has been praised by Ofsted inspectors, with 3 out of 4 children making at least 6 months’ progress in reading in just 10 weeks, and 1 in 3 pupils made the equivalent of a year’s progress. It is particularly effective for children on Free School Meals, with pupils’ reading scores increasing by twice as much as their more advantaged peers. See our online reports for full information. PLRS can help your pupils achieve ambitious APP and IEP targets and provides a targeted and measurable intervention, making effective use of Pupil Premium funding.
“The Premier League Reading Stars scheme has had a very positive impact on the group of pupils we targeted. The data impact has been measurable and this was highlighted by our recent OFSTED report. It was a fine example of a high impact intervention which was recognised and applauded by the inspectors.” Mark Ratchford, Headteacher – Castor CE Primary, Peterborough
What is Premier League Reading Stars?
The programme is aimed at children aged 8 to 13 and is delivered by teachers and librarians. The pack contains everything needed to inspire football fans to become reading fans, through 10 football-themed literacy sessions, typically delivered over 10 weeks. PLRS delivers statutory requirements of the new national curriculum, and the sessions include activities such as helping children to choose texts that are at the right level for them, and of interest to them, and how to skim and scan for relevant information. Children who take part in the programme have the added motivation of receiving Premier League-branded materials, such as certificates, wristbands, reading journals and wall charts. See what is in the full pack by viewing our webpages.
The packs are supported by 20 Premier League football players who talk about what, when and why they like reading, and set reading challenges, via online videos. You can view last year’s challenges at www.premierleaguereadingstars.org.uk. All pack resources, reading stars, and online challenges have been updated for the 2014-2015 season.
